Career Development Center do’s and don’ts

Résumé

DON’T mention specific duties and responsibilities. Instead, focus on transferable skills.
DO mention campus and community involvement, as well as work experience.
DON’T put high school experience on your resume if you’re a junior or older.
DO be consistent with formatting.
DO tailor your resume for each job you are applying for.

Interviews

DO come prepared and do research on the company beforehand.
DON’T let the interview become negative. Maintain a positive attitude about any question, such as how you handled working with a difficult person.
DO be ready to answer common questions and have questions to ask employers.
DON’T come in jeans and a T-shirt. Dress one “level” higher than you would normally wear to be employed at that company.
DO practice with family and friends. “Anyway you can get more practice interviewing will build your confidence,” Muntis said.
Career Fair
DO come dressed up.
DO look ahead at the employers and bring tailored resumes.
DO prepare a “pitch”: a 15 to 30 second speech introducing yourself and your skills and experiences.
DO follow up afterward by sending a note or email.
