Hospital patient arrested for battery of staff

A 46-year-old man, who claimed he had AIDS, allegedly tried to bite and spit on hospital personnel Wednesday, Bloomington Police Department Lt. Bill Parker said.

At about 11:24 p.m., officers from BPD responded to a report of a combative patient at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, Parker said.

According to the report, a doctor told the patient he needed a mental commitment, and the patient objected and became combative.

When officers arrived, Parker said they restrained the patient and checked him into the mental detention section of the hospital.

He is being charged with battery by bodily waste.
