For the fourth time, Evansville lawyer Patrick Shoulders has been elected to a three year-term on the IU Board of Trustees.
Shoulders, who works at the law firm Zimer, Stayman and Weitzel, was re-elected by IU alumni.
The election is conducted online and through the casting of paper ballots by the Dean of University Libraries in Bloomington, with library staff and students counting the nearly 16,500 ballots.
Shoulders has two IU degrees — a J.D. from the IU School of Law in Indianapolis and a bachelor of arts degree from IU Bloomington. He was chairman of the IU Alumni Association in 2000 and has served on the IU Foundation Board of Directors.
In 2005, he received the Herman Wells Leadership Award from Sigma Nu
Fraternity.
Shoulders was originally appointed as trustee in 2002. He was then was elected by alumni to the board again in 2005 and 2008.
“I’m honored that the alumni have given me the opportunity to serve our beloved alma mater for another three years,” Shoulders said in a press release. “IU is on a great path right now, and I pledge to work hard to continue its success.”
Two candidates ran against Shoulders this year: Jonathan Sweeny of Bloomington and William A. Werner Jr., of Hanna, Ind.
“I want to thank my opponents and encourage them to stay connected to IU and encourage all of our alumni to stay involved with the University,” Shoulders said.
Altogether, IU has nine trustees on the board. Three of the trustees are elected by alumni, while Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels appoints the remaining six.
