It’s difficult for me to listen to “Alpocalypse,” Weird Al Yankovic’s newest parody masterpiece and follow with any serious critique.
It’s not so much the overwhelming goofiness and lack of tact that comes with anything Weird Al associated, or that I had to look up a lot of the original songs that were being caricatured.
The difficulty lies in the fact that there is just nothing to compare it to. There’s no gauge for determining how good a Weird Al album is, right?
Either you choose to engage in the humor or not. In my case, I will shamelessly admit I loved the movie Weird Al starred in, “UHF.” I love his “Running With Scissors” album, I love Hawaiian shirts and I knew every word to “Amish Paradise” when I was in the
fourth grade.
So for me, something like “Polka Face,” Yankovic’s accordion-driven take on Ga Ga, Lady Antebellum, Kid Cudi, Bieber, and Katy Perry (to name a few) is hilarious.
And if that doesn’t convince you, just listen to the chorus of “Craigslist” and try not to feel the laughter boiling up out of your gut.
“Alpocalypse” reminds me how stupid pop songs are these days to begin with.
Maybe I’m stretching it here, but there is something honest about how Weird Al executes this reminder.
For that, I will continue to eat up all the cheesiness, as gut wrenching as it may be.
