Summertime is finally here. Shake the Florida sand off your spring break bathing suit. Fill up that $8 inflatable baby pool that you got from Target. Bust out those tacky plastic margarita glasses. Relax. Definitely don’t spend all your waking hours on the Internet looking for new summery songs. Leave that menial indoor task to me. When you’re ready to move on from listening to “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper on repeat, be sure to check out these great songs to get you in a summery mood.
“Deadbeat Summer” – Neon Indian
You know that summer day that’s so hot that you walk around sweating buckets and nearly hallucinating things? This is that feeling in
song form.
“Bounce” – Calvin Harris ft. Kelis
This is the latest track from Scottish DJ and record producer, Calvin Harris. He enlists the help of R&B/pop diva Kelis, and the result is nothing but danceable bliss. If you’re studying overseas this summer, plan to hear this song non-stop.
“Nicki 3-6 House Mafia Bells” – Diplo
Ever wish you could listen to your four favorite songs all at once? Well now you can with this new mash-up by producer extraordinaire, Diplo. This one is best heard in the car at max volume.
“Strawberry Swing” – Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean, R&B crooner of Los Angeles-based rap group Odd Future, sings over the instrumental Coldplay song of the same name. Many people — myself included — are pegging Frank Ocean as the new Drake. After checking out “Strawberry Swing,” you can decide if you think the comparison is valid.
“Feel It All Around” – Washed Out
Following in the footsteps of bands like Animal Collective and Toro y Moi, Washed Out has developed their own brand of groovy chillwave. This track is my favorite off their 2009 EP, “Life of Leisure”.
“Party Rock Anthem” – LMFAO
Even mentioning my love for this song will seriously hurt my hipster cred. But let’s face it: The song is really catchy. Remember the “Ill 5 Anthem?” This song will sound suspiciously familiar. Be sure to check out the music video and attempt to learn the 1-2 step dance.
“Lets Go Swimming” – Allo Darlin
This mellow and breezy track from London-based indie rock band Allo Darlin is the perfect soundtrack for a mid-afternoon drive to Lake Monroe.
“BTSTU” – Jai Paul
Listed as “Best New Music” by Pitchfork , this single by UK singer-songwriter Jai Paul is just the right mix of varying vocal tones, garbled-distorted synth and intriguing lyrics. The track was recently re-released by UK record label XL — also home of Adele, The Xx and Vampire Weekend.
“Jack Sparrow” – The Lonely Island ft. Michael Bolton
Everyone’s favorite comedy/hip hop group is back with a brand new album called “Turtleneck & Chain.” This song features a movie-obsessed Michael Bolton on the hook which confuses the Lonely Island gang as they rap about getting drunk at the club. Make sure to check out the hilarious video which features an eyeliner’d Bolton in pirate garb.
