Teenager shot at Martinsville middle school

A teenage male was shot today at West Middle School in Martinsville, Ind. According to the Martinsville Reporter-Times police arrested Michael Phelps, 15, today after he allegedly shot fellow student Chance Jackson a little before 7:30 a.m.

Jackson was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with two gunshot wounds to the stomach, Indiana State Police confirmed.

Phelps had stated “today is the day” on his Facebook page and when asked by a friend if he was at school, Phelps said “Yea I’m here but not for long.”

After the shooting Phelps fled the scene throwing the gun, which after a search police later found. Phelps was eventually arrested near South Elementary School.

Jackson is currently in Critical but Stable condition after being taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

His mother, Rebeka Jackson, has asked for your thoughts and prayers for both her son and the suspect that is in custody, along with his family.
 
The handgun was recovered in a field southwest of the school. No information will be released on its make, model or caliber.
