IU adds Cox scholarships

IU helped advance the legacy of the late Jesse and Beulah Chanley Cox as the University created three new scholarships bearing their name, announced Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson last month.

The scholarships, which cover the full cost of tuition, were made possible through the generosity of the late Jesse and Beulah Cox. In 2005, the Coxes made a $15 million contribution to the University, and a later endowment by their estate brought the total number of funds for the various scholarship programs to $92 million.

1. Cox Scholars
Cox Scholars are Indiana residents who illustrate a strong academic background and a willingness to succeed in their undergraduate studies.

The scholarship provides 75 percent of the total cost of attendance for four years (eight semesters) with the remaining 25 percent coming from the student’s own employment.

2. Cox Research Scholars
Cox Research Scholarships are awarded to Indiana high school students who are interested in conducting research under the direction of a faculty member. Students are expected to work on their project, which is tailored to their own particular academic interests, at least eight to 10 hours a week.

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS

3. Cox Engagement Scholars
Students commit to covering 25 percent of the cost of tuition through their work as Advocates for Community Engagement by serving as a vital link between a particular community agency or organization and the students and faculty interested in community service.

Each recipient serves the local community and partners with that particular agency for at least one year, involving themselves in the day-to-day activities of the agency or organization.

4. Cox Exploratory Scholars
Incoming IU students who have not declared a major have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of academic fields through career development programs and activities.

Students cover 25 percent of the cost of tuition by serving as peer mentors, resident assistants or IU ambassadors to Ivy Tech Community College.

5. Cox Access Scholars
Meant to assist returning students who have been away from school for five years or more, Cox Access Scholarship recipients work to earn 25 percent of the cost of attendance as determined by the Office of Student and Financial Assistance.

They contribute to the life of the University by showing their commitment to higher education and the importance of continuing one’s studies after having been away for some time.

Cox students
Students Laura Buuck, Laura Engelhardt and Shabrelle Pollock have
received one of the Cox Scholarships.

Buuck, sophomore, Cox Scholar — “Before I was awarded the Cox Scholarship, I was working 40 hours a week between several jobs sometime and often until 3 or 4 a.m. My classes, extracurricular activities and social life suffered considerably. Now that I have this scholarship, I still continue to work, but I work jobs that I love rather than the ones that will give me the most hours. It’s been so positively life-changing.”

Engelhardt, senior, Cox Research Scholar — “I’ve been able to work one-on-one with a faculty mentor within the Department of Psychological and Brain Science lab with Dr. Karin James. She’s been the main individual, and beyond her, I’ve been able to work with other people in the lab such as grad students as well as other scholars.”

Pollock, senior, Cox Scholar — “It’s empowering to be in a group of aspiring people. I am always trying to better myself and never stop proving that I am worthy of the scholarship. It has made me respect and admire people who are dedicated to making the commitments necessary to succeed when it is not requested of you.”
