Hoosiers improve to 5-0 with weekend wins

The No. 45 IU women’s tennis team won two home matches Sunday, defeating Marquette 5-2 before sweeping Cincinnati 7-0.

After the team lost two of three doubles matches to Marquette, IU coach Lin Loring made lineup changes for the Cincinnati match.

“Our doubles isn’t at the level it should be right now,” Loring said. “On paper it looks like our singles is ahead of our doubles, so we just need to rethink some of the combinations maybe. I was pretty confident that even if we lost the doubles we could win the singles, so I took advantage of that to experiment a little bit.”

IU responded with three doubles victories against the Bearcats, two by 9-7 scores. Loring said the doubles matches were pretty close considering that the Hoosiers won all their singles matches in straight sets.

Senior Katya Zapadalova was the first to win her match against Cincinnati, overmatching her opponent with an array of winners. Two of her teammates were still in their first sets when Zapadalova walked off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

“Usually my style is being aggressive, and just make winners, and go for the balls,” Zapadalova said. “It’s kind of just the way I play. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but it worked today.”
