RA, CUE presentations encourage sign-up

The couches of the Landes Formal Lounge in Read Center were filled Tuesday during an information session for students interested in becoming a Residential Programs and Services resident assistant or community educator.

Students still looking to become RAs or CUEs for the 2011-12 academic year can attend similar upcoming sessions where they can talk to current staff members and get a feel for what the job entails.

“We have a presentation that walks students through what their role would be, including the benefits, monetary and otherwise, of becoming an RA or CUE,” said Jeanne Lady, associate director for residential operations.

“We basically de-mystify what RAs do.”

After attending an information session, students must complete an application available on the RPS website.

The application, due Jan. 23, requires students to submit two essays and two references —one from a current residence center staff member.

Lady said she encourages students to apply early to avoid technical difficulties.

In addition to applying, interested students are required to enroll in the School of Education class U450: Undergraduate Student Personal Assistant.

While the process might appear tedious, sophomore and Read Center resident assistance Teresa Rodriguez said it’s worth it.

“The application and interview process is really long, but it was worthwhile because I wanted it so bad,” Rodriguez said. “There is an instant sense of belonging with the staff you work with and your residents as well.”

Freshman Christine Geils, who attended the session, said she is interested in becoming an RA based on past experiences with student leaders.

“I want to help students transition from home to college life easier,” Geils said.
“I went to boarding school when I was younger, and I had a good experience with RAs helping me to adjust, and I want the same for IU students.”

Any student who has lived on campus for an academic year at the end of the upcoming spring semester is eligible to join the RA or CUE staff.

“We are looking for trainable people who want to work with our residents,” Lady said.
“We want the best people to work with our residents to have a great time at IU.”
