Dogs make a splash at Drool in the Pool

Humans are out and dogs are in.

That’s the rule at the sixth annual Drool in the Pool taking place Wednesday and Thursday nights at Bryan Park Pool. The pool closed for the season Sunday, but allows dogs to cool off before draining the water.

The event is sponsored by City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department and White River Co-op.

The first night will be filled with canonballs and big splashes and the second night will feature doggie contests. Categories include biggest splash, dog/owner look-alike, pet tricks and cutest dog. Each winner will receive a trophy and the grand prize winner will receive a year’s supply of dog food from PMI Nutrition and an doggy glamour picture from Puparazzi, according to a press release.

Dogs attending the splashtacular event must be at least six months old and be up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. The owner must have written proof or a rabies vaccination tag for their dog.

For safety purposes, Bill Ream, program/facility coordinator for Parks and Recreation, cautions owners that not all dogs are swimmers. Some dogs might not enjoy the water or be able to swim the length of the pool. Also for safety purposes, staff can ask any dogs and owners to leave if there is aggressive behavior.

Ream also recommends owners to play with their dogs beforehand to avoid feces in the pool. All owners are responsible for cleaning up after their K-9 friend.

The splashing is done after Thursday, but not the fun. “Hotel for Dogs” will be played 9 p.m. Friday at Bryan Park for pets and their owners. Admission to the movie is free.
