School leader retires over secret marriage
A northern Indiana school’s superintendent who kept his marriage to another district administrator a secret for nearly five years has decided to retire.
Mishawaka schools officials said Steven Mills sent a letter to board members Monday asking them to accept his retirement immediately.
District attorney Ed Sullivan said Mills feels that the controversy surrounding his marriage prevents him from being an effective leader.
The school board put him on administrative leave last week after he disclosed that he’d been married to literacy programs director Joann Shaw since 2005.
GM plans to add 245 jobs to Indiana factory
General Motors plans to add a manufacturing line at a southern Indiana factory and add 245 jobs in the coming years.
Company and state officials announced the plans Tuesday at the plant in Bedford.
General Motors says it will spend $111 million to upgrade the factory, which is one of the world’s largest aluminum die casting facilities.
The Bedford Project is part of a $890 million investment GM is making at five factories to make more fuel-efficient v-8 engines and create roughly 1,600 jobs.
The Bedford plant now has about 370 workers. The new jobs are expected to be added by 2013.
New prosecutor to review stun gun use on Indiana boy
A special prosecutor has been appointed to consider whether two central Indiana police officers should face criminal charges for slapping and shocking an unruly 10-year-old boy with stun gun.
Morgan County prosecutor Steve Sonnega asked a judge to remove his office from the case because of its relationship with the Martinsville Police Department. Former Greene County Prosecutor David Powell was named to the case.
Martinsville police Capt. William Jennings and Officer Darrel Johnson have been assigned to limited desk duties, pending the results of the investigation.
The officers were called March 30 to a day care center where the boy hit, kicked and spit on a caretaker. The incident occurred after the child kicked one of the officers.
