Eighteen years ago, MTV revolutionized television with “The Real World,” a series that initially tackled a slew of serious issues.
This year, MTV revolutionized the medium again with “Jersey Shore,” a series that tackled its own group of serious issues. You know, like the proper way to tan, beat down the beat or be a stand-up wingman. No series has introduced so many new vocab words to our lexicon and altered the meanings of others: “GTL,” “grenade,” “Ron Ron juice,” “gorilla,” “robbery” and of course, “situation.”
And after years of reality TV full of either self-aware characters or flat-out creeps, “Jersey Shore” brought us “people” with pre-packaged, self-appointed nicknames who were aware of their stereotypes and confirmed them every second.
The “uncensored” tag is misleading, but it’s still glorious to return to episodes for the second, third and in some cases, 10th time. The cast, especially The Situation and DJ Pauly D, never, ever become boring, somehow.
Despite what it might say about us as a society, “Jersey Shore” is must-watch TV. If you haven’t seen it yet, now’s your chance.
‘The Situation’ is back
