Two crosswalks, both on Fee Lane, will be installed by the time students return from spring break on March 22.
One will be on 13th Street by McNutt Quad and the other will be between the Kelley School of Business Godfrey Graduate and Executive Education Center and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Kelley undergraduate building.
The crosswalks were created through a partnership between IU and the City of Bloomington.
“The goal for the University and the city in this project is to provide pedestrians a safe place to cross the street on Fee Lane, which has a high amount of foot and vehicular traffic,” said Keith Cash, interim deputy chief of the IU Police Department in an IU press release.
The crosswalks will be accompanied by a promotional campaign including Web sites, posters and handouts.
Cash added that Indiana law gives pedestrians the right of way when they enter a zone that is clearly marked as such. However, there are several restrictions, such as pedestrians cannot step suddenly off the curb.
IUPD and the Bloomington Police Department will enforce the Indiana laws in the new crosswalk areas and if the crosswalks are effective, additional crosswalks could be added on campus.
The crosswalks were a recommendation of a Campus Safety Task Force that was created in September 2009.
