WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue University students are teaming up with Habitat for Humanity to develop disaster-resistant homes that could help developing countries. The work has taken on a sense of urgency since the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated Haiti, killing more than 200,000 and injuring thousands more.


Indy fire kills 3

INDIANAPOLIS — Authorities say an Indianapolis man trying to lead his family out of their burning home got trapped inside and could only listen in horror to the cries of his two children, who died in the fire along with his girlfriend. Thirty-seven-year-old Daniel Fox told investigators he ran into a bathroom around 6 a.m. Saturday looking for an escape route.


Payments to victims of sex crimes improving in Indiana

FORT WAYNE — An Indiana fund designed to help victims of violent crimes has improved in its handling of payments to victims of sex crimes but is still more than three years behind in other payments. The Indiana Crime Victim Compensation Fund, run by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, paid more than $2.9 million for sexual assault claims through August 2009, said T. Neil Moore, the institute’s executive director.
