During a speech to the House of Representatives, Obama was – yet again – trying to convince on-the-fence representatives that his health care plan actually has a snowball’s chance in Cuba of working. While saying that his plan would not cover illegal aliens, Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., burst out with an irreverent and distasteful “You lie!”
Taking the high road, Obama accepted Wilson’s apology later that week and said the “matter was closed.”
Whew. That was a close one. For a second there I thought it was going to spark wild partisan bickering and postpone serious debate over issues that actually matter.
Oh, wait. It did.
Wilson’s name was dragged through the mud for over a week and Democrats actually called for – and received – a “resolution of disapproval” against him.
One question: What does this accomplish?
Absolutely nothing.
Nothing came of this resolution; he was not punished or reprimanded in any way. I would call it a slap on the wrist but it would have probably hurt him worse had they actually slapped him.
The resolution was, however, the perfect distraction for Democrats to buy more time to pass health care legislation. They all but promised Americans health care reform before the August recess. This did not happen.
But why? I thought Obama said, “Health care is a right.”
Numerous polls are now coming out that show Americans simply don’t want government-run health care. The latest Rasmussen poll shows that the opinion of “Obama/Democrat” health care reform has hit an all-time low.
Americans who oppose the idea of the reform proposed by Obama and congressional Democrats is now 56 percent, while those in support of the Democratic proposal have dropped to 41 percent.
With these dropping numbers, it will become harder to pass the type of bill Democrats originally wanted. Obama knows this, so don’t be surprised if he starts putting pressure on Congress to get something on his desk before too many Americans start thinking what Rep. Wilson said aloud.
The wrong resolution
