11 hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak

LAWRENCE, Ind. – Authorities say about 30 people have been evacuated and nearly a dozen hospitalized because of a carbon monoxide leak at an Indianapolis-area apartment complex.

The Indianapolis Star reports Lawrence fire officials found five people on a balcony complaining of nausea and dizziness early Saturday.

No conditions were available for those who became ill, but authorities say many had been treated and released from area hospitals.

Lawrence Fire Department Battalion Chief Dino Batalis described the level of carbon monoxide as “lethal” and said it could have caused deaths if someone had not called 911.
He said a furnace was venting directly into an apartment. Ten units were evacuated.
