McRobbie, Hanson to address affordability

IU President Michael McRobbie and Provost Karen Hanson will address affordability during a press conference Tuesday in the Indiana Memorial Union, according to a press release.

McRobbie and Hanson are expected to announce a new initiative to keep college affordable for Indiana students.

The announcement comes after State Senator Luke Kenley threatened to delay the University's construction projects until the school agreed to decrease tuition.

“We want IU and Purdue to be outstanding universities, but they need to be realistic,” Kenley told The Associated Press. “I don’t think we need to see increases like this in the middle of a recession.”

In July, the board of trustees approved a 4.6 percent in-state tuition increase for the 2009-10 school year and 4.8 percent for the following year.

The press conference will be webcast live at http://broadcast.iu.edu/ at 11 a.m.
