A homely, middle-aged woman with bushy eyebrows strolled proudly onto the stage for her performance on “Britain’s Got Talent.”
She smiled self-assuredly, but the audience took one look at her and laughed. She marched to the center of the stage to a chorus of sarcastic catcalls and cruel snickers. Even the three judges, Simon Cowell included, rolled their eyes at this woman’s confidence, certain that her performance would be comedic.
They probably assumed that since she didn’t have the look of popular female vocalists who pose seductively on album covers, she would probably have a terrible voice.
As Boyle proved, that logic is completely flawed.
Boyle had promised to “make that audience rock” in her interview before she auditioned. She certainly kept her promise and began receiving applause four seconds into her performance. When she was finished singing, she blew the shallow audience a kiss, though they didn’t deserve it. They unfairly forced her to prove herself to earn their approval.
Susan Boyle, a 47-year-old Scottish spinster, was the unfortunate recipient of a disgraceful amount of prejudice.
Since her audition last week, Boyle has gained as much popularity and as much fame as a “Britain’s Got Talent” contestant is capable of achieving. Naturally, the intimate details of her life have been scrutinized by the media.
Perhaps the juiciest facet is her love life – or lack thereof. Susan Boyle is almost 48 years old and has never been kissed or taken out on a date, and the public seems more concerned with getting her some loving than a recording contract. But apparently they forgot that she came on the show hoping to showcase her singing abilities – not to get a seminar about kissing techniques.
She didn’t audition to be a contestant on “The Bachelor.”
She has a gorgeous voice and wants to be a professional singer. Beyond her love affair with singing, her love life is irrelevant.
Even “The Today Show” gave her the title “Never Been Kissed Singer.” The media are so fascinated with Boyle’s personal life that the focus is drawn away from her incredible talents.
Piers Morgan, one of the judges on the show, included a blog entry on his Web site where he discussed his reaction to the first show of the season. He spent about a paragraph raving about the level of talent some of the acts showcased.
He concluded his blog entry, which was mostly about Susan Boyle, with an anecdote.
He picked up a newspaper to find that Susan Boyle has said in interviews that he is the man with whom she hopes to end her “unfortunate situation.”
“When I was asked for a quote by the Star on Sunday,” Morgan wrote, “I replied simply, and truthfully, with one word: ‘GULP!’”
Many of the comments left on Morgan’s message boards encourage him to kiss Boyle. I’m sure he won’t go through with it. But I have a feeling Boyle will move on to greener pastures.
The press has been reporting that men all over the world are offering up their lips. But, like I said, that’s irrelevant.
Irrelevent love life
