Abortion is one of the most abominable procedures our culture tolerates. Just as our country was wrong on slavery, we’re wrong on abortion. It is disgusting to know that a country that prides itself on the motto of “liberty and justice for all” has denied liberty and justice to more than 45 million people – the amount dead since Roe v. Wade passed.\nMany people who support this disgusting procedure are acutely uneducated. First, they don’t know that 45 million are dead. Second, they deny that life begins at conception. Every human whether alive or aborted, has been conceived. This first step in life’s process cannot be skipped, if it cannot be skipped and it’s the first step, then it must mean that it’s important and that it’s the beginning. Life begins at conception!\nThird, many do not know what these surgical procedures include. One of the procedures, dilation and extraction, makes an incision at the base of the skull where a catheter removes the brain until the skull collapses, killing the baby. Another procedure called dilation and curettage cuts the fetus out of the womb. Another procedure is suction aspiration, where the baby is suctioned out of the womb by a vacuum.\nReports claim that 93 percent of all abortions occur for social reasons, 6 percent occur because of potential health problems of the mother or child and only 1 percent of all abortions occur because of rape or incest. So, 41.9 million babies have died because women claim “it’s just not the right time” and the baby is “unwanted.” How selfishly disgusting and degrading an attitude toward a life that was formed for a reason.\nDuring weeks three to five of pregnancy a baby’s sex is determined, his or her central nervous system develops and formation of the brain, spinal cord, muscles and bones begin. In weeks six and seven, heart contractions begin and the lungs are functioning. In weeks eight and nine, nose and ears begin forming, eyelids cover the eyes and the baby’s movements can be detected on an ultrasound. And most abortions take place between eight and 12 weeks of gestation.\nWhile I think abortion is dead wrong, even in the cases of rape, incest and when the health of the mother or baby is jeopardized, I would make an exception. This exception must be made if overturning Roe v. Wade is the goal. \nIt is time to up the ante and change the way we debate this issue. This debate has nothing to do with “women’s rights” or “reproductive rights.” This is about human rights of the unborn. It’s not about being pro-choice. It’s about taking responsibility for your actions. When sex is consensual, a choice is made that getting pregnant could very well happen. What kind of culture can we say we are when we don’t have to take responsibility for our actions? What kind of culture can we say we are when we intentionally pass laws that allow an innocent life to be ended? This is not a culture of life. We must change the frame of debate on this issue. This debate is about being pro-life vs. anti-life.
