Leading human rights activist to speak about genocide in Darfur

John Prendergast, former director of African Affairs on the National Security Council and current co-chair of the Enough Campaign, will speak about the situation in Darfur at noon Tuesday in the Oak Room at the Indiana Memorial Union.\nThe lecture, “Stopping the Genocide in Darfur,” is part of the African Studies’ “Noon Talk” series held every Tuesday.\nPrendergast will talk about the genocide in Darfur in an effort to increase awareness and action on the IU \ncampus. \n“John Prendergast is particularly active to the situation in Darfur. He is co-chair of the Enough Campaign, (an organization) to bring about a change to the crisis in Darfur,” said Maria Grosz-Ngate, an adviser in the African American and African Diaspora Stud-\nies Department. “This is a particularly interesting discussion because this is a topic in \nthe news.”\nGrosz-Ngate helped bring Prendergast to IU and expects about 60 people to attend the event.\n“This was a collaborative effort ... working with the Office of International Affairs to invite him to give a talk,” she said. “The opportunity arose when we found out he was coming to Manchester College in Indiana.” \nShe said Prendergast was willing to come to IU because it offers him a chance to speak about issues he truly cares about. \nGrosz-Ngate said she hopes the audience will take advantage of “an opportunity to hear from someone actively involved and to get his insights and assessment of the situation.”
