The Buskirk-Chumley Theater’s Fashion+Function+Art show Wednesday gave onlookers the chance to see Bloomington through a different lens – literally. \nThe BCT hosted the benefit on behalf of Optiks, Bloomington’s optometry specialists who bring unique designer eyewear together with state-of-the-art technology in eye care. The show was a combination of theater, fashion, music and food, revealing the eclectic artistic and cultural community that thrives throughout Bloomington. \n“The theater and arts should get the funding that they need – they’re an integral part of our community,” said Optiks owner and event organizer optometrist Ron Hawkins. “Bloomington is truly unique. We don’t support any chains. All the models in the show are Bloomington regulars, the people you’d see everyday downtown from the mom-and-pop businesses. It’s neat to see them cooperate for a good cause.” \nProof of the innate artistic appreciation within Bloomington business owners, Hawkins and other local area businesses idealized a fashion show that not only showcased Optik’s selection of fine eye wear, but also incorporated a multitude of Bloomington retailers and performing artists. \nMiah Michaelsen, runway model and Bloomington’s assistant economic development director for the arts, said that participating in the show was an absolute blast and that she was glad to be able to help bring to life the incredible range of clothing available from Bloomington’s edgy fashion scene, which she said runs the gambit from “fun, affordable and comfortable” to “gorgeous and unique.” \nFashion+Function+Art kicked off with an impressive acrobatic performance by the Bloomington High Flyers, followed by the energetic strut of runway models from businesses all over Bloomington to start off the night’s featured two-part fashion show. Hair and makeup for all models was provided by Bloomington’s Mira Salon and Day Spa. Intermission entertainment included a preview performance from the professional Cardinal Stage Company’s upcoming performance of “Oliver.” \n“We promoted over 40 businesses with this event,” said Executive Producer Stephanie Shotts. “It was great to have had Optiks back me up in putting on a show that supports the community of Bloomington and the BCT.”
