Acting U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth P. Moritsugu will discuss IU's role in public health issues at 9:30 a.m. today in the Indiana Memorial Union's Whittenberger Auditorium. \nThe School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation invited Moritsugu as part of HPER's 60th anniversary celebration.\n"We have a lot to celebrate," said Mohammad Torabi, chairman of the IU Department of Applied Health Science. "Our Ph.D. in health behavior is number one in the nation among universities without schools of public health -- number five among those with schools of public health. \n"I had the privilege of inviting the highest-ranking public health officer in the nation to share with us his vision and our role in health."\nTorabi said Moritsugu will speak about IU's HPER program, highlight current public health issues and share what IU can do to contribute to state and nation medical care. Moritsugu will be visiting with faculty and students in various meetings today and Thursday, but the public address this morning is open to all.\nTorabi said he hopes Moritsugu's visit will raise public awareness about the importance of the prevention of premature death and expose the community to other state and national public health issues.\nMoritsugu, who is an adjunct professor of public health at the George Washington University and adjunct associate professor of preventive medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, was appointed the U.S. surgeon general in July. \nThe speech will be streamed live on the Internet at http://broadcast.iu.edu.
