Dissent - The Day of Silence is a paradox -- supporters of the GLBT cause remain silent, but in doing so draw more attention to themselves. It is nothing more than another publicity stunt.\nWhat's troubling about this particular cause is that it completely intrudes into the lives of everyone, regardless of their stance on the issue. Even one person's silence in the classroom or workplace can impede effectiveness by adding inconvenience.\nIf a group protests, unconcerned citizens have the option of involving themselves with the crowd or simply walking past and ignoring the entire incident. With the Day of Silence, passers-by have no option -- they must force themselves to deal with the difficulty presented by a crusader for the GLBT cause who obstinately refuses to speak.\nThis silence goes beyond disrespectful -- it treats the rest of the world as inferior by forcing it to accommodate those choosing to be difficult on that day.\nPrint and broadcast ads, hold meetings, picket or do something that allows the public to choose to either listen to your argument or walk by unmolested. At least it shows common courtesy by treating the desired audience as a body of people intelligent enough to decide to listen or not. The Day of Silence abrogates this courtesy for brazen exhibitionism and shameless self-righteousness.\n--Adam Sedia
