IU steals 12 bases in win over ISU

Freshman Eric Wagner picks up 1st collegiate win

The IU baseball team improved its record to 4-4 against in-state opponents and swept the season series against Indiana State University after an 11-5 victory Tuesday over the Sycamores at Sembower Field. \nFreshman Eric Wagner pitched three scoreless innings of relief in his first collegiate victory, and junior second baseman Keith Haas went 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI to lead the Hoosiers in the win.\nThe Hoosiers (13-20) stole 12 bases on the day, led by senior center fielder Reggie Watson, who tied a school record with four stolen bases in the game. Senior left fielder Jay Brant had three steals. \n"I just try to get on base and take off in the first two pitches," Watson said. "(Stealing bases) is the most fun part of the game for me."\nWatson went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored to go along with the four steals. Brant finished the day 1-for-3 with two runs scored.\nIU junior and starting pitcher Andy Casper struggled with his control in the first inning, hitting two batters and walking one. The Sycamores scored two runs in the inning on just one hit. \nThe Hoosiers cut into the two-run deficit in the bottom of the first. Watson singled and stole second with one out, then scored on a single by freshman first baseman Cameron Satterwhite. \nSophomore David Trager relieved Casper in the second inning, allowing one run and three hits for a 3-1 ISU lead. \nIU erased the deficit and took the lead for the final time with eight runs in the second. Haas drove in one run with two singles and scored twice in the inning, as the Hoosiers sent 11 batters to the plate and collected six hits. Senior designated hitter Zach Boswell hit a two-RBI double and junior third baseman Steve Head hit an RBI double in the inning.\nBoswell went 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the game. Freshman right fielder Andrew Means went 2-for-4 with one steal and one run scored. \nEight is the most runs the Hoosiers have scored in a single inning this season. \nWagner (1-2) relieved Trager in the third and allowed three hits in his three innings of work, striking out three and walking one.\n"It feels good to get back out here and get on the mound," Wagner said. "It was good to get a rhythm again." \nThe IU bullpen allowed three runs and 10 hits in eight innings.\n"I like the way we swung the bats today," IU coach Tracy Smith said. "Hopefully it carries into this weekend"
