With Mike Davis gone, IDS Editorial Board can 'relax,' move on
To the IDS Editorial Board: No reason to bash the fans now! Mike Davis gives us all a reason to cheer for the Hoosiers, again. Whether you like him or not, you have to be happy this mess has come to an end. We've read several times how the IDS staff viewed the issue; we should cheer now and worry about Davis' fate later, right? Well, part of the issue was that this season (along with a few choice quotes by Davis) has been a large part of Davis' fate. Beyond that, did you really think you were going to change the mind of this hostile bunch? Students everywhere were reading in their dorms, "Well, I was going to boo Mike Davis at the game, but ... Gee wiz! Now, I realize my views are shortsighted and foolish!" It seems inappropriate to call this group of students, whose only hope and intention was for a better future, "shortsighted." They never really wanted to see the Hoosiers lose; they just don't want to see the same thing next year. They don't want to watch a motionless offense. They don't want to watch the talent of the players like Marshall Strickland and Roderick Wilmont go to waste. They don't want to listen to Davis blame them for losses. And now, they don't have to. Davis thinks we need "one of our own." Not necessarily, we just want someone who can play our kind of ball. We want to see some Midwest recruits. We want to see five guys on the court playing with the same passion and desire as Errek "Pepper Pot" Suhr. But most of all, we want to win games and remain the prestigious program we've always been. So, to the IDS I say: Relax. Just because you have a voice and a pen doesn't mean we want to listen to you say the same thing everyday. We've heard what you have to say. Now Davis has done us all a favor, and you can write about something more interesting like what kind of stapler you use or why you prefer shorts to pants. Dan UeberFreshman
Fans betray Davis, IU basketball midseason
You know something, I just want to congratulate these Indiana fans. I hope they are real proud of what they did: betraying their own coach and team in the midst of a season when things really weren't so bad. OK, they lost a few late games, but do you know who really is to blame? The fans, myself included. I never really had a problem with Mike Davis, but I was at fault because I should have made a better effort in reminding these people just how important fan "SUPPORT" was. Now, thanks to these stupid people, we are going to lose two incredibly talented basketball players. I come from a different part of the United States, but everywhere I went I always heard what great fans Indiana has. Well, I say that's a load of crap -- enjoy your new coach, but expect a transition phase much like any coach in a new system. And hopefully, in the mean time, learn to be a real fan. Columnist should get some clue about IU basketball traditions
Once again, Ryan Phillips, you prove your ignorance of the once-proud IU basketball tradition ("Davis leaves with dignity fans need," IDS, Feb. 17). These underachieving players that you say will transfer? I hope they do. Like you, they obviously have no concept of the aforementioned tradition. These players came here simply because they perceived Mike Davis as a friend, a nice person. They didn't come to IU because they wanted to play for IU and be part of the tradition, but it's obvious that you know nothing about this either. Bill SimonAlumnus
