Hoosiers win 3 of 3 in successful weekend at home

IU moves onto ACC competition in road trip

Eager to wrap up an action-packed weekend, the No. 31 IU women's tennis team swept Butler University 7-0, clearing the Indiana Tennis Center courts in two hours. The Hoosiers accumulated a 3-0 record for the weekend with a 7-0 victory over Marquette University on Saturday and two wins Sunday, the first over DePaul University 6-1.\nThe Hoosiers improved their record to 7-1. After a 12-day break from dual play, the team took the courts showing few signs of rust.\nSenior captain Sarah Batty, ranked No. 98 nationally in singles, won all three of her singles matches for the weekend, including her first win of the season over a ranked opponent. Batty took out the Blue Demons' Gergana Ganeva, the No. 85-ranked singles player in the nation, in a third set tiebreaker 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (6).\n"I knew it was going to be a great match going into it," Batty said. "I was hitting the ball well throughout the match. I definitely think it was one of my better matches."\nIU coach Lin Loring said it was a good win for the Chesterfield, England, native.\n"It was a great match for her. She has been close this year (to beating ranked opponents). We know she can play at that level, so hopefully this will give her \nconfidence," he said.\nLoring said the final score against DePaul did not reflect the competitiveness of the match.\n"The score of the DePaul match was a little deceiving. That could have been 4-3," he said.\nFreshman Alba Berdala salvaged the No. 3 singles point against the Blue Demons. Down 3-0 in the third set, Berdala stormed back against DePaul's Anja Mihaldinec to claim the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Spaniard's dual singles record now stands at 5-2. \nContinuing their steady play in singles and doubles were sophomore Brianna Williams and freshman Sigrid Fischer. Williams is yet to drop a set in singles play at the No. 3 spot, while Fischer's only singles loss came against No. 5 Duke in three sets.\n"Brianna and Sigrid have been playing really well," Loring said. "They've both been real consistent."\nIn doubles, the Hoosiers dominated play, winning eight of nine matches. The No. 37 tandem of Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan rolled against Marquette and DePaul, winning 8-2 and 8-1, respectively.\nLooking ahead, the Hoosiers will face No. 23 Wake Forest University Saturday, followed by a match against North Carolina-Greensboro on Sunday. It will be the Hoosiers' first road trip of the season.\nWilliams said the early season matches will help in preparation for the Demon Deacons. \n"I think we're going to be well-prepared," Williams said. "Even though we lost to Duke (6-1 on Jan. 29), all the matches were close. I think that gives us the idea that these next harder matches will also be really good."\nAfter three dual matches in two days, Batty echoed Williams' sentiments.\n"This weekend has been quite taxing both physically and mentally," she said. "But hopefully it will prepare us for the next couple weeks"
