Answer: Collins \ncigarette butt mural
When students enter the Collins Living-Learning Center, they are greeted with a message created by IU students nearly 10 years ago. \nAs a final project for Q199, a course required for freshmen living in the residence hall, four students created a mosaic composed of cigarette butts found in the courtyard of Collins in the fall 1996. The students, Jonah Busch, Matt Coker, Monica Smith and Jenny Schmetzer, used the cigarette butts to make a map of the world. \nCatherine Hawkes, assistant director of Collins LLC, said the mosaic was created with several messages in mind. \n"That one was done to raise awareness, both of how many students are smoking and the litter it was creating," she said. "They picked up every cigarette butt in the courtyard in one day. That was one day's accumulation."\nThough some Q-projects are pieces of art, Hawkes said there are many other ways students complete the class' final project requirement. \n"We actually try to discourage people from doing that kind of project, because we have limited space," she said.
