Governor appoints 3 new trustees

Former IUSA president chosen for position

Gov. Mitch Daniels announced his appointments to the IU board of trustees Wednesday, filling three seats whose terms expired this summer, including the student trustee.\nTaking over are Tom Reilly and Dr. William Cast, whose terms begin in August and extend till July 1, 2008. The new student trustee is second-year law student Casey Cox, whose term expires one year earlier than the others. \nCox said he understands the workings of IU not only because he is currently a student but he was president of the IU Student Association. He was also a special assistant for civic engagement with the Division of Student Affairs and an undergraduate legislative assistant for Hoosiers for Higher Education. Cox was one of 21 students who applied for the position.\nReilly is no stranger to the workings of the higher education system. He retired in 2003 after 13 years as chair of Reilly Industries, an Indiana company that supplies chemicals across the world. He has also served on Daniels' Committee on Higher Education for the Indiana Government Efficiency Commission and was chair of Butler University board of trustees. Of the three trustees, Reilly is the only one who has not received a degree from IU.\nCast, who has his undergraduate and medical degree from IU, is the founder of DuPont Hospital in Fort Wayne and its first chairman. His private practice has been in place since 1969, and he also helped found a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school in Fort Wayne. \n"We have taken great care to select Hoosiers who are willing to serve in leadership positions at our colleges and universities," Daniels said. "Our universities must play a crucial role in Indiana's economic growth and are critical to preparing the next generation for the knowledge economy. They need and deserve talented leadership."\nDirector of Media Relations Larry MacIntyre said University officials were notified by the Governor's office this morning. \n"The president will be contacting the trustees very quickly to get to know them and congratulate them and he's looking forward to working with them," MacIntyre said. \nIU Law Professor Fred Cate was nominated Wednesday by Gov. Mitch Daniels to the Indiana Commission on Higher Education. He will serve a two-year term that will expire July 1, 2007. Cate could not be reached for comment by press time.
