'Bewitched' lacks comedic magic, plotline

FRANCE ENVIRONMENT

During the 1960s "Bewitched" was one of the most popular television shows. Unfortunately, for Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, those who flock to see the movie version of "Bewitched" will be extremely disappointed. The movie has some relation to the series featured on ABC, but it's a little bit of a stretch. \nNicole Kidman plays Isabel Bigelow, a real-life witch who decides she wants to give up the craft to be normal and fall in love. Will Ferrell stars as Jack Wyatt, a has-been actor who takes on the role as Darren in the revamping of "Bewitched." Ferrell decides to cast Kidman as Samantha in the television show because she can twitch her nose like Elizabeth Montgomery did in the original show.\nViewers' frustration may come from the movie not being a spin-off of the TV show; instead it's a movie about people trying to remake the TV show. While the acting is decent, the script could have been much better. The movie is filled with a couple of one-liners, but lacks comical flow. \nKidman as the happy but ditzy role of Bigelow was cute but was a disgrace to Montgomery's role as the witty witch in the original show. Toward the end of the movie, I found myself getting annoyed with Kidman's cheery naïve attitude and wondering if the movie was going to end soon.\nHowever, Kidman performance is far better than Ferrell's. He shows that he is not a versatile actor. If you enjoy his roles in movies like "Anchorman" and "Elf," then you will get a chuckle or two from Ferrell's role in "Bewitched" -- but it is unfitting for this movie. This fluff romantic comedy and Ferrell's schtick clash, making viewers feel as though the two actors are on different levels.\nMany scenes with Ferrell feel like repeat humor from his past movies. His facial expressions, tone of voice and overall performance give me a sick feeling of déjà vu.\nThe movie was set-up to be promising, with box office stars like Kidman and Ferrell. But the movie is a letdown. \nI would hope if Elizabeth Montgomery saw this movie, she would be just as upset as I was. For those fans truly dedicated to the show, I advise you not to sit through this movie. Instead, stay home and watch reruns of the true "Bewitched"
