I applaud the Indiana legislature. It seems like they are one of the few states that actually passed legislation this year. However, I am amazed that this bill was deemed "heroic" by Brian Bosma, the Speaker of the House. The bill I am talking about is the daylight-saving time bill which will make Indiana join the Eastern Standard Time zone and observe daylight-saving. That sounds like it makes sense and a bill on that subject would definitely be important. Someone tell me why Indiana should follow the same clocks as the state of Maine, almost 800 miles away, but we should definitely not be on the same time as the state next to us, Illinois?\nGov. Mitch Daniels said that many businesses and organizations supported the bill because all the time changes in Indiana messed up delivery times and conference calls. So, apparently UPS and FedEx are unhappy because neither can figure out that a few counties in Indiana are sometimes not always on the same time as the rest of the state. Honestly, just deal with the way things are. Chicago is right near the northwestern boundary of Indiana; the hour difference between Chicago and Gary will not have an impact on deliveries and conference calls. Wait, I have to be at work at 8 a.m. in Chicago so I need to wake up at 8 a.m. here? I already feel the pain of the people who just found their lives even harder.\nApparently, this bill was supposed to bring Indiana into the 21st century, according to Bosma. What does any of this have to do with the idea that Indiana is still "living" in the 20th century? Wasn't daylight-saving time adopted by the US to help conserve resources during World War II? Oh, using a system that makes sure we have enough guns and tanks to fight Nazis really pertains to the 21st century.\nIf this bill was logical, I would support it. But I don't cater to making the lives of people at DHL any easier. Making the people in the Indiana House of Representatives feel that they are five years behind the rest of the universe is also something I don't prioritize into my schedule. Everything needs to be logical and that might only happen if, heaven forbid, that Indiana is different. Gasp! Different? We don't use that word in this 21st century.\nWell, the bill was passed and we can't go back in time to change it... we can only spring ahead and fall back or some mumbo jumbo. Anyway, Daniels & Friends now say they need to petition the US Department of Transportation to see if any counties in Indiana need to join Central Time. Huh? Did we not just pass a bill to bring everyone to the same time and zone? There is that special phrase, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Amen to whoever coined that saying. I hail from Ohio and the time change never bothered me, nor did I feel that Indiana's time was "broke" and we all needed to "fix it."\nI think there is ultimately one solution to the daylight-saving time issue. Let's just abolish the concept of time altogether. If we do it my way, then I don't feel guilty for going to bed at 4 a.m. and sleeping in until noon. Oh, then classes would always have to be cancelled because then when would we know when to show up? I am definitely going to try to get legislation to abolish the concept of time. I feel that this will truly bring us all into the 21st century.
