IU policy on Benton Mural is hypocritical

I disagree with some of President Herbert's opinions in regard to the Benton mural in Woodburn 100. First off, I do agree that the mural serves as a reminder of the KKK and the atrocities they caused. I also agree that the Holocaust museums have been established so that we never forget what happened and work to ensure that these events never happen again. \nI, however, disagree that Woodburn 100 should be compared to the Holocaust museum. Students do not have to take classes in the Holocaust museum, but at IU, many students are forced to learn in an environment with a symbol of hate on the wall. It is unfair for anyone to have to endure this if it offends them. We can chose to go to the Holocaust museum, if I don't want to see the pictures of bodies piled into mass graves, I can chose not to. I can't choose, however, to take a class in Woodburn 100 without seeing the Benton mural. \nAs a Jew, I could not handle taking a class in a building with a picture of Hitler on the wall, I feel that this mural created the same problems in African American students and Semites alike as we have all been victims of the KKK.\nThe fact that IU has spent $800,000 on making videos and educating students about the mural shows me that IU is aware that the mural is a problem. I believe that knowing it's a problem, and simply trying to justify it and educate people about it rather than remove it creates a disassociation between what IU believes and what IU does. If it is a problem, why not put it in a museum, or a non-classroom building. The fact of the matter is, the mural should be removed. I can also say the same about the Swastikas in the HPER building. But that hasn't been touched by the IDS for several years.
