Column is offensive to Bloomingtonians

I was shocked to see a column in the May 12 IDS by Mr. Glenesk titled "To the remaining, b-ware." This column is highly offensive to those of us who are considered "townies." It was crude and unjust. This young man is highly mistaken if he thinks that Bloomington "townies" are all chewing tobacco, owning farmland and speaking with a southern accent. Sure, we have some citizens of Bloomington who may fit that stereotype, but so does any town in the United States. \nBloomington is proud of all of its citizens, we are a highly diverse bunch. The fact that Mr. Glenesk would stoop so low as to insult all of his fellow Bloomingtonians is an awful stereotype to put out there into Indiana University's populace. I have graduated from a Bloomington high school and now attend IU, but I recall the good attitudes by all in Bloomington toward any college student that shows them the respect they deserve. \nThis column should never have been printed by the IDS, it is prejudiced and does not show that Bloomington is actually a very diverse town. The town during the summer months is so much more peaceful and lovely. We "townies" put up with the college students rampaging throughout our town, but this sort of disrespect for the so-called "townies" that are paying taxes to maintain the IUB campus is irresponsible and unnecessary. The column was disrespectful and I believe a formal, in-print apology is necessary to be written by Mr. Glenesk talking about all the wonderful people and things in Bloomington, instead of his skewed version of things.
