A family reunion worth attending

'Fockers' good, but DVD lacks fun features

"Meet the Fockers," the sequel to 2000's hit comedy "Meet the Parents," picks up where the first film left off. In preparation for their upcoming wedding, Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) and Pam Byrnes (Teri Polo) plan for their parents to meet for the first time. So begins a visit where uptight Jack and Dina Byrnes (Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner) meet the wacky Bernie and Roz Focker (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand). Unsurprisingly, chaos ensues.\n"Meet the Parents" was an absolute classic, arguably the best comedy released in the last five years. While the sequel isn't the stunning success of its predecessor, it is still a good movie. It's entertaining to watch a movie where you can tell the actors are enjoying being in it. Most of the film revolves around the six main characters, with additional roles only used to further the plot. It's an intimate look at the collision of two families who couldn't be more opposite, a situation familiar to many viewers. The men of the film steal the show, as the interactions between Greg, Jack and Bernie are classic. Hoffman is particularly commendable, as he provides a perfect antithesis to Jack's CIA tough guy. The women, unfortunately underused, also fill their roles quite nicely. \nIt's unfortunate that for a really good movie, the DVD features are disappointing. You're better off watching both "Parents" and "Fockers" as a double feature than digging through the DVD extras. The commercials for the DVD rave about the deleted scenes and bloopers, but they just don't deliver. All the deleted scenes should have stayed that way and the bloopers are only amusing if you want to see Robert De Niro break character and laugh along with the rest of the cast 65 times. The featurettes are pretty dull; the mockumentary about Mr. Jinx is a little funny, but the joke gets old quickly. The commentary (with director Jay Roach and producer Jon Poll) is incredibly dry and does not fit with movie's style. It's too bad that a commentary with the main characters couldn't have been made.\nIf you loved the first one, you'll enjoy "Meet the Fockers." The movie is great, even if the extras are subpar. Finally, a family reunion worth attending.
