While You Were Out ... What happened in Bloomington over the summer

  • A fire ripped through an off-campus house in May claiming the lives of three \nIU students and injuring another. Juniors Jacob Surface and Joseph Alexander, both 21, and Sophomore Nicolas Habicht, 20, died in the fire. The fire was classified as an accidental electrical fire that began in an area cluttered with numerous electrical appliances. Paul Dayment, a 21-year-old IU junior, survived the blaze.\n
  • Uncle Fester's and The Jungle Room could face suspension of their liquor licenses or fines. The bars have been under investigation since Indiana State Excise Police unexpectedly entered the premises July 15. Police issued 22 underage drinking citations.\n
  • The Park and Ride Shuttle service will be moved from Bryan Park to Winslow Sports Complex beginning in September. The Bloomington Public Transportation Corp. board voted 3-1 in early August in support of the move. IU Student Association President Tyson Chastain attended the meeting on behalf of the students to express his disapproval of the move.\n
  • Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan approved four neighborhood grants which would aid in the restoration of brick sidewalks in Bryan Park, tree planting in Gentry Estates, a walking trail in Highland Village Park and the installation of historic markers on the city's west side.
