Cross country places 12th; 2 receive All-American honors\nThe Hoosiers took advantage of their at-large berth to the NCAA National Meet to place 12th overall with a team score of 387. Stanford won the meet with 24 points.\nThis is IU's best finish since 1987 when the team placed 10th. It is an improvement from last year's 25th place finish.\nIU was paced by sophomore Sean Jefferson who finished 19th overall in a time of 29:57.7. Senior Chris Powers finished 33rd. The two earned All-American honors for finishing in the top 35.\n"To have two guys become All-American and finish 12th in the nation in one day, obviously it gives us an excellent feeling," IU coach Robert Chapman said in a statement. "It was a really solid day for us, and I was really pleased with our guys. It especially meant a lot because guys from my first-year recruiting class are now fifth-year seniors, and we have always had a vision of reaching this level. This is where we always wanted to be."\nSophomore Charlie Koeppen finished 96th, sophomore Stephen Haas finished 118th and junior Tom Burns finished 121st.\nWomen's team finishes 27th; Peterson earns All-American honors\nThe IU women's cross country team competed in the NCAA National Championship Monday, Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. The team earned an at-large bid to the meet after finishing fourth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional a week earlier in Terre Haute.\nStanford won the national championship by knocking off defending champion Bringham Young University by a team score of 120 to 128 points. Shalane Flanagan from North Carolina defended her national title by winning her second straight individual championship with a six-kilometer time of 19:30.4 .\nIU finished 27th overall and junior Mindy Peterson led the way for IU by placing 46th overall, which earned her All-American honors. Peterson completed the 6k course with a time of 20:51.\nSenior Audrey Giesler finished 82nd overall with a time of 21:09.2, sophomore Kelly Siefker placed 139th with a time of 21:29.3, and freshman Kristin Whitezell finished 215th with a time of 22:14.5. Sophomore Larra Overton finished 227th with a time of 22:23, junior Julie Shields was 191st with a time of 22:27.4, and junior Heidi Crowley finished 199th with a time of 22:38.4.\nThis was IU's second straight national championship appearance since 1990. IU coach Judy Wilson said this was a mediocre day for the team and she is remaining optimistic for next season.\n"I thought if we ran well we could have placed in the top 20, but only three of our girls had run in this meet before, so we were inexperienced," Wilson said in a statement. "Overall, I am happy because at the beginning of the season and even mid-season, we weren't even sure if we would be here. The good thing is, next year we return eight girls to the team and we will have a lot more experience coming into the Nationals."\nHome meet successful for wrestling team\nThe Hoosiers wrestling team followed up an impressive performance at last week's Missouri Open with a double win Saturday in their home opener. IU defeated Manchester 36-9 and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 36-6. A score of wrestlers took double wins in their matches as they helped the team improve to 2-0 on the season.\nSenior Coyte Cooper, fresh off his 141-pound championship at last week's meet, pushed his record to 6-0 on the year with two pins of his opponents. Cooper was not alone in the double win category. In the 125-pound weight class, sophomore Joe Dubuque only needed a combined three minutes and nine seconds to pin both of his foes. The quick victory moved Dubuque to 3-2 on the year. In the 157-pound division, junior J.P. Stanley scored two decisions to earn eight points for the Hoosiers while sophomore Tim Falls also earned two victories via decision.\nJunior Andy Rios, who garnered a second-place finish last week at the Missouri Open in the 184-pound class, built upon that solid performance with two major decision victories at the meet. Also getting second place at the Missouri Open was freshman Matt McIntire who went 1-1 on the day, losing a decision to SIUE's Joe Rujawitz, but rebounded to take a win via another decision from Manchester's Rocky Burkett.\nSophomore Brady Richardson earned IU another eight points with his two major decisions over SIUE's Pat Healy 19-4 and Manchester's Derrick Whitback in the 174-pound weight class. Richardson's two wins also compliment a fourth-place showing at the Missouri Open. In the Heavyweight division, sophomore Joel Powers dominated his two opponents, notching a 7-0 decision over Manchester's Matt Overman and pinning SIUE's Chris Moore in just 3:39. Also getting four points for the Hoosiers was junior Pat DeGain. Only facing one opponent on the day, DeGain easily out pointed Sean Tyrus of SIUE 10-5. IU takes their 2-0 record and travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, Saturday, to compete in the Northern Iowa Open. The meet kicks off in the morning and runs all day. \nSeason comes to a close for volleyball team\nThe IU women's volleyball team wrapped up its season last weekend with a defeat at the hands of Wisconsin 30-22, 28-30, 30-14, 30-26. The loss dropped the Hoosiers' final record to 12-19 overall and 5-15 in the Big Ten. \nSenior Melissa Brewer, playing the final match of her IU career, set IU's all-time kills record as she pounded out a team-high 15 against the Badgers. The Bloomington native will leave IU as arguably one of the best to ever play at IU. Brewer not only holds the career school record for kills with 1,557, but earlier this year, she vaulted to the top of the career block assist record and finishes her career with 469 career block assists. Brewer also ranks second on the school's all-time blocks list, only five off the record with 521. \nAgainst the Badgers, junior Christina Archibald notched her seventh double-double of the year, recording 13 kills and 13 digs, and reached the double-digit kill plateau for the 47th time out of the Hoosiers' last 48 matches. \nThe final match of the season also marked the conclusion of three other Hoosiers' careers. Seniors Nikki Hill and Monique Pritz and junior Beth Heimann suited up for IU in their career finales. Hill collected 10 digs and hammered seven kills, Heimann added six kills and Pritz recorded three kills, four digs and one block assist.
