Applications for next semester's new leadership positions of Union Board, IU's largest student organization on campus, are due by 5 p.m. today in preparation for the upcoming elections. \nUnion Board organizes diverse events and activities on campus.\nAssistant Director for Concerts and Major Attractions Sarah O'Brien is one of many candidates running for an office. She said she hopes to continue her work with UB.\n"I've been here since the first semester of my freshman year," she said. "I love everything about it. There is no limit."\nSince the elections do not permit potential directors to run for a specific position or committee, O'Brien must first be voted into a directorial position, and then be selected as the specific director for a committee.\nO'Brien said she is both excited and nervous about the election.\n"It's nerve-racking. You have to get your name out and make known what you're there for," she said. "(I'm running) mostly because I love Union Board."\nUnion Board President Andrew Goldberg said any student is welcome to run for a position.\n"Elections are open to the entire campus," he said. "I always encourage others to get involved. I've been involved for three years since my freshman year. And this year, I was fortunate enough to be president."\nOut of 16 student directors, three will be executives and the other 13 positions will be directly involved with the committees, Goldberg said.\n"We will have a series of retreats where the board selects officers and elects specific people for specific jobs, and that's how Union Board takes shape from year to year," he said.\nGoldberg said candidates should follow specific advice.\n"Approach the position with an open mind … with a new set of ideas, and be prepared to work as a team. Be ready to hear the voice of the student body," Goldberg said. "That will make for a successful member in a directorial board position."\nGoldberg said UB's main goal is to bring the University together. \n"We are here to provide entertainment and educational programs that have a long-lasting impact on the University," Goldberg said. "There's so many different interests and walks of life (on campus), that it's important for us to bring everyone together."\nNot only does the organization bring diversity to the entire campus, it also provides members of all levels of involvement with valuable experiences.\n"We encounter real world experiences," Goldberg said. "I think Union Board has truly defined my college experience."\nVoting will take place Dec. 2 and selections for these positions will be made Dec. 4. \nO'Brien said she is excited about the idea of being selected into a directorial position. \n"It's a large commitment, but it's also going to be one the best experiences I'm going to have," she said.\n-- Contact staff writer Stacie Vasko at svasko@indiana.edu.
