Winter in Bloomington has never seemed so bad.\nIU winters are mild. A few snow storms and some cold days. \nBut this winter is proving to be different.\nSnow is something we can't get away from. It's on our cars in the morning and on our backpacks, shoes, coats and hats when we get to class. Its remnants grace the floors and stairwells of all the buildings, and the possibility of slipping to the ground is constant.\nBut we haven't seen the last of the snow.\nEverytime the temperature warms up and the snow melts off the ground, hopes are raised.\nOn Feb. 2 and 3 temperatures warmed only to be replaced by snow and cold.\nToday may offer slight relief, but the snow is expected to return by Friday, if not earlier, according to the National Weather Service.\nBut this weather can't compare to the worst blizzard in Indiana history. In 1978, between Jan. 27 and 28, 20 inches of snow fell in central and southern Indiana, according to the NWS, and northern Indiana received 40 inches all together. \nA federal state of emergency was declared. \nAt least that would mean no class. \nBut until a blizzard hits or spring arrives, IU students will have to continue to trek through the snow, slush and ice day and night. \nThere is no relief from bad weather when your primary mode of transportation are your legs.
