Being called the best band in Colombia is probably like having the toothiest smile in Kentucky or being the best football player at IU. Aterciopelados ("The Velvety Ones") actually is the best band in Colombia, and thankfully for them and us, they are worthy. Evolución, its new greatest hits record, shows off a band that combines various styles from bolero to mariachi to ska to hard rock, but always comes out pop. Lead vocalist Andrea Echeverri transcends the sweaty, Latina stereotype: mindless lyrics inside a short hemline. Some have compared Echeverri to Gwen Stefani, but I hear the toughness of Chrissie Hynde buoyed by a love of '70s British rock. Roxy Music legend Phil Manzanera produced Aterciopelados' 1997 album, "La Pipa de La Paz," and the band translates and covers Queen's "Play the Game" in "Juégale Apuéstale." Combine that with the rhythmic stew that rock "en español" provides, and you have a one-of-a-kind outfit, bristling with energy, professional in a good way and proudly Colombian.
