It's Shane's World

Here's another piece giving Shane's Enterprises, a porn company, that "invaded" IU's campus in October, some free publicity. I'm sure they're upset.\nIt's a difficult situation, though. I really don't think we should stand by and let such acts be committed on campus, but then again, some people would argue that filming a dorm resident getting favors from a porn star is an artistic expression, and we wouldn't want to upset these "artists," now would we?\nIn a recent interview with Bill O'Reilly on "The O'Reilly Factor," Calli Cox, publicist for Shane Enterprises (a.k.a. Shane's World), said that IU was enticing to their company because, "It was ranked the No. 1 party school in the nation. And we wanted to see why it was ranked that." Bollocks. The only thing Shane Enterprises wants is money. The pornography industry didn't become bigger than all other entertainment industries combined because nobody wanted money. No matter what they say, they were here to cash in by exploiting our university.\nAccording to Cox, who has a surname fitting for her profession, the crew filming "Campus Invasion" was allowed into Teter Quad by a student, supposedly a resident of the dorm. Residence hall policy states that guests must have escorts at all times while in the dorms. It seems that in this case, the escorting was done by Shane Enterprises.\nSome argue that the crew from Shane Enterprises was let in legally, but they were there for a profit-bearing cause which is specifically not allowed in the dorms. It's solicitation. It's sexual solicitation, which is illegal. Take out the middleman, the camera crew. Now we have six "actors" who are entering a college campus, offering sexual acts to people outside of their company, which they will in turn be paid for. It can be construed as prostitution, really. The students weren't paying for the sex, but the porn stars will be paid for what they did. The fact that this group entered a college campus and essentially solicited sexual acts to students is ridiculous. This is a tax-payer funded institution, not a brothel.\nAs far as punishing students who were involved, I think they will receive enough flack when word spreads about who they are. Not that I'm curious, but, you know, if there are budding porn stars on campus, I'd like to get their autographs before they hit the big time. If anybody should be punished, it should be Shane Enterprises for exploiting a university that was mislabeled "No. 1 party school in the nation." IU has had enough trouble dealing with the moniker. Shane Enterprises decided to cash in on our misfortunate ranking by filming a little movie.\nCox argues, "One student told us he films his own adult movies in his dorm room all the time. These things happen on your campus whether we are involved or not." Maybe they do, Calli, but a student filming adult movies for his own pleasure is a far cry from a full-fledged production company barging into a college campus trying to make a profit. \nIt will be interesting to see what action the University takes against Shane Enterprises. Hopefully it results in keeping Shane Enterprises from doing the same thing in dorms on other college campuses.
