Student injured following frat party

IU investigates; freshman treated for head injuries

An IU freshman is expected to be released from Bloomington Hospital today, four days after being admitted with serious head injuries after leaving a fraternity rush event.\nThe injuries sustained by the student, later identified as 19-year-old Wes Kocher, resulted from blunt force trauma to his head.\nKocher was reported to have left a rush function at the Delta Chi fraternity, 1100 North Jordan Ave., around 1:45 a.m. Monday morning. His roommate at Read Center found him bleeding from the head around 4 a.m. and called a taxi to take him to the hospital, police said.\n"We want to know if anyone saw anything that could relate to him," Sgt. Tim Lewis of the IU Police Depar-tment said. "The student might have been assaulted or might have fallen down."\nA Bloomington Hospital official said late Thursday Kocher was in stable condition and was expected to be released today.\nDean of Students Richard McKaig said there is an ongoing investigation into the incident. He is unsure if the injuries are linked with the Delta Chi rush function.\n"We encountered the student at the hospital and that's where we started our investigation," McKaig said. "There's no reason to believe the injury happened at the fraternity, though we haven't ruled that out."\nPresident of Delta Chi David King said his fraternity will assist in any way with the investigation in a statement released late Thursday.\n"Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the entire Kocher family whom we have known since Wes's brother joined our chapter several years ago," said King, a senior. "We will fully cooperate with the IUPD's investigation into this terrible incident in hopes of finding justice for this violence done to Wes."\nIUPD encourages anyone who saw anything out of the ordinary, saw the student walking, or saw any signs of trouble from 1:45 a.m. to 4 a.m. Monday to call the IUPD at 855-4111.
