'Moulin Rounge' finally gets encore

Moulin Rouge Vol. 2\nVarious Artists\nInterscope Records\nWhile the music from the Oscar-nominated film "Moulin Rouge" was snubbed by the 'lil golden boy, Fox didn't flinch when making the decision to release a second soundtrack. This second compilation of songs from the film -- among other things -- answers the one question lingering in my mind after purchasing the first soundtrack: "Where the hell is 'Like A Virgin'?"\nThe first track is an instrumental version of "Your Song," which played during the rehearsal montage in the film. The beautiful piano solo by Craig Armstrong is backed wonderfully by a string orchestra. "Sparkling Diamonds" is the next track. While also on the soundtrack's first volume, this version appeared in the film and features Nicole Kidman going all out in the Marilyn Monroe solo "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend." \n"One Day I'll Fly Away" is remixed by Tony Phillips creating an interesting sound. The track mixes Kidman's vocals with some bizarrely catchy techno-tricks. "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)" is another track that I felt was sorely missed on the first album. But here it is in all its wonderment. The track is presented in its original film version with the cast truly shining. \nThe original film version of "Come What May" is featured showing once again that Ewan McGregor actually can sing. While McGregor's voice isn't particularly strong, it has a quality that seems appropriate for a rock star. He somewhat overpowers Kidman in the duet.\n"Like A Virgin" features Oscar-nominated actor Jim Broadbent as Harold Zidler. While seeing this track acted out in the film is a superior experience, the track creates vivid imagery in my mind. Richard Roxburgh as the Duke is also amusing.\n"Meet Me In The Red Room" performed by Amiel is apparently the original film version, but honestly I don't remember seeing it. Nonetheless, it is an upbeat, sexy '40s and 50s swing-like track sure to make you dance.\nThe disc also features another instrumental version of "Your Song," the original film version of "The Show Must Go On," "Ascension/Nature Boy" from the death scene and the music from the film's closing credits, "Bolero." This album definitely left me feeling happy, giving me all the songs I missed on the first disc. A friend of mine asked me if the funked-up remix of "Lady Marmalade," "Children of the Revolution" and other songs from the can-can scene were on here. Sadly they aren't, and there isn't enough music to make a third volume. Oh well. I'm thoroughly satisfied with two.\n
