'E.T.' still corny, but it's heartwarming as ever

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - PG\nStarring: Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace Stone, Drew Barrymore\nDirected by: Steven Spielberg\nShowing: Showplace West 12\nIt was the end of the movie when it first hit me. Elliot's (Henry Thomas) mother (Dee Wallace Stone) was crying. Her poor son had to say goodbye to his new alien friend, E.T., and she was crying. Everyone in the scene was crying, and I was crying too. I realized that "E.T." is possibly one of the corniest movies of all time. No doubt it's one of the best movies ever made, but if you really think about it, it's incredibly cheesy and stupid.\nIf "E.T." were released today for the first time, it never would have made it. But in 1982, the world was ready for "E.T." Only Steven Spielberg could bring us a heartwarming movie about an alien. The strange thing is, you are sitting there crying because you think E.T. is going to die and then you realize what he looks like. Spielberg didn't create a cute and cuddly alien you want to play with. E.T. is ugly! He's wrinkly, brown, kind of slimy, and yet E.T. has this amazing capability to capture your heart.\nThe most exciting person to watch in the movie is Drew Barrymore, who plays Elliot's younger sister Gerdie. This was in her pre-cocaine days as a young actress. Barrymore is adorable in the film and brings a lot of humor to the screen as well.\nThere were a few scenes they put back in the movie that were originally deleted. E.T. and Elliot hang out in the bathroom and E.T. finds some interesting things to do in there. Apparently E.T. has been "digitally re-mastered" but I couldn't really tell a difference. He's still got skinny arms, a big gut and a massive head.\nYes, I did say E.T. was perfect for it's time and not today's time, but the thing is, it will take you back in time. I forgot I was in a movie theater while I was watching it. I could have sworn I was at the babysitter's back in 1986 and watching the movie on video. If the sight doesn't take you back, the music will. When the boys are on the bikes running from the police, you just wait in anticipation because you know that any second now they're going to fly into the sky and that ever-familiar music will start. You'll see it, you'll hear it and you'll remember how you felt the first time you experienced it -- totally in love with some stupid, ugly alien that kind of looks like a prune.\n
