IU Baseball places in a preseason top 25 poll for the second time

Then-freshman infielder Jeremy Houston, now a sophomore, is congratulated after returning to the Hoosier dugout after his first career home run on April 29. IU defeated No. 20 South Alabama 8-4 Sunday afternoon.

For the second time in less than a week, IU baseball has been ranked in a preseason top 25 poll.

In a most recent poll by D1Baseball.com, the Hoosiers were ranked No. 23— five days after Perfect Game USA ranked the team at No. 17.

In both polls, IU was the only Big Ten school to be ranked.

With the first pitch of the 2018 exactly one month away, the Hoosiers will have hefty expectations to live up to following a fourth-place Big Ten finish last season.

IU’s first game will be against the Oklahoma Sooners, who were unranked in this most recent poll. However, they were placed at No. 18 in Perfect Game USA’s poll.

Both polls overlapped in terms of the top two teams, placing Florida and Oregon State at No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Texas Tech and Florida State were also included in the top-five of each poll.

IU will face South Alabama in their third game of the season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Jaguars were unranked in Perfect Game USA’s poll, but are ranked No. 20 according to D1Baseball.com.

The Hoosiers season will begin with 11 games on the road before coming back to Bloomington for their home opener on March 7.
