Troops encircle Baghdad

Chipping away at the vestiges of Saddam Hussein's power, U.S. forces encircled Baghdad Sunday and began flying into the capital's airport. British forces in the south made their deepest push into Iraq's second largest city. A hulking U.S. C-130 transport plane landed at the Baghdad international airport, carrying unknown cargo but weighted with symbolism and tactical importance.

Whereabouts of Saddam remain secret to world

CAIRO, Egypt -- In peacetime, Saddam Hussein's whereabouts are top secret. In war, with the U.S. military after his head, it's even harder to keep track of him. The Iraqi president -- or possibly a double -- has been seen on state-owned television giving speeches, chairing meetings of top lieutenants and on one occasion greeting well-wishers on a Baghdad street.

OUTSKIRTS OF BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A giant C-130 transport plane landed at the Baghdad airport Sunday, the first known U.S. aircraft to arrive in the Iraqi capital since the airfield fell into U.S. hands.

WASHINGTON -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday there was "not a chance" that the United States would agree to an arrangement that would halt the war and allow Saddam Hussein to survive. "It doesn't matter who proposes it, there's not going to be one," Rumsfeld told a Pentagon briefing.

US troops surge into Baghdad

U.S. troops surged Thursday into the southern outskirts of Baghdad, attacking its international airport and waging four hours of skirmishes with Iraqi troops determined to protect their capital. Elsewhere, one American was killed by friendly fire, and U.S. officials said Iraqi forces appeared on the verge of collapse.

Israeli troops raid refugee camp

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Israeli troops looking for weapons-smuggling tunnels raided a Gaza refugee camp early Thursday, killing four armed Palestinians in exchanges of fire and demolishing five houses. In the West Bank, two Palestinians, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed by army fire.

Cuba may use force to end armed standoff on ferry boat

HAVANA -- Cuban authorities warned Thursday that force may be needed against armed hijackers who have seized a ferry boat with nearly 50 people on board in a bid to reach U.S. shores. After a 30-mile chase into international waters on Wednesday, the ferry was escorted back to the Cuban port of Mariel, just west of Havana.

Thousands of US troops enter 'red zone'

American forces fought their way to within sight of Baghdad's skyline Wednesday and claimed the destruction of a pair of menacing Republican Guard divisions. An Army helicopter was shot down, killing seven of its 11 crew members.

Bomb explodes in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines -- A bomb exploded Wednesday near a bustling wharf in the southern Philippine city of Davao, killing at least 15 people and wounding 34, officials said. Two children and a nun were reported killed in the explosion, the second bombing in this city in less than a month.

Closing to within 35 miles of Baghdad, U.S. forces seized a bridge over the Tigris River and swept past battered Republican Guard units Wednesday. One of the key Guard divisions, defending the city of Kut, "has been destroyed," a U.S. general said.
