European spacecraft enters lunar orbit

BERLIN -- A small spacecraft has made it into lunar orbit, signaling Europe's first successful mission to the moon and paving the way for the craft to be used to study the lunar surface, a European Space Agency spokesman said Tuesday.

Saddam diverted oil for food money to suicide bomber families

NEW YORK -- Saddam Hussein diverted money from the U.N. oil-for-food program to pay millions of dollars to families of Palestinian suicide bombers who carried out attacks on Israel, say congressional investigators who uncovered evidence of the money trail.

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin Powell and three other Cabinet members have resigned, escalating the shake-up of President Bush's second-term team. Senior administration officials said Monday that national security adviser Condoleezza Rice was most likely to succeed Powell.

Health Center hours change for holidays The IU Health Center's holiday hours begin Nov. 24, the first day of IU's Thanksgiving break. That day, the IUHC will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Day, and the day after, the IUHC will be closed all day. It will re-open when fall classes resume Nov. 29 at the regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

U.S. forces fight insurgents across Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- U.S. and Iraqi forces fought deadly battles with insurgents across central and northern Iraq on Monday. The worst reported fighting took place in Baqouba, where the military said at least 20 insurgents were killed. Militants hit at least four different U.S. troop convoys with car bombs, wounding nine Americans in and around the Sunni stronghold of Ramadi and in the northern city of Mosul.

Forum addresses terrorism

As U.S. troops raided Falluja Friday afternoon, IU students gathered at the Indiana Memorial Union to dissect terrorism and the war on terror. "I know it was a bit ambitious," said David Baker, forum co-coordinator and graduate student. "But I wanted to see what IU students had to say on these issues, whether they were apathetic or not."

U.S. battles militants in Fallujah

FALLUJAH, Iraq -- Insurgents tried to break through the U.S. cordon surrounding Fallujah on Thursday as American forces launched an offensive against concentrations of militants in the south of the city. Some 600 insurgents, 18 U.S. troops and five Iraqi soldiers have been killed in the four-day assault, the U.S. military said.

Former 'Times of India' editor speaks at IU

There is more to India than it just being a country to which jobs are outsourced. It is an example of a democracy that works in its truest sense. This was the message of Gautam Adhikari, former executive editor for The Times of India, a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a consultant at the World Bank, who spoke Thursday evening in the Student Building.

N. Korea rights act passes

The North Korean Human Rights Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush Oct. 18 after months of lobbying by four IU student groups. The bill enables North Koreans to stay in the United States as refugees and includes a humanitarian aid package, as well as the appointment of a special envoy for North Korean human rights.

PARIS -- Yasser Arafat, who triumphantly forced his people's plight into the world's spotlight but failed to achieve his lifelong quest for Palestinian statehood, died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Paris time, at the age of 75.

U.S. forces corner insurgents in Fallujah

FALLUJAH, Iraq -- U.S. forces cornered insurgents Wednesday in a small section of Fallujah after a stunningly swift advance that seized control of 70 percent of the militant stronghold. An Iraqi general said troops found "hostage slaughterhouses" where foreign captives had been killed.

Bush names new Attorney General

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush has chosen White House counsel Alberto Gonzales, a Texas confidant and the most prominent Hispanic in the administration, to succeed Attorney General John Ashcroft, sources close to the White House said Wednesday. Ashcroft announced his resignation Tuesday, along with Commerce Secretary Don Evans, friend of the president's from Texas.
