Senate likely to revise House budget plan

State Sen. Lawrence Borst, R-Indianapolis, is perplexed. Borst, the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, is perplexed with House Democrats, whose $2.1 billion two-year budget passed the chamber 81-18 Monday. The House version of the budget would increase higher education spending by 3.8 percent over two years and K-12 education by 4 percent. It would spend $700 million more than the state is expected to bring in, according to state revenue projections.

Athletics director chosen

Most indications are that IU President Myles Brand will name Colorado State athletics director Tim Weiser IU's next athletics director, possibly by the end of the week. Trustee Stephen Backer said he wouldn't be surprised if Brand names Weiser to the position. "I think he was No. 1 on the list," Backer said. "That's what I was hearing."

Greek houses serenade

Many fraternities and sororities participated in the age-old tradition of serenades Tuesday. Started years ago as a way for houses to choose pairs for Little 500, serenades have become a tradition for most greek houses before Little 500 and Homecoming. "What was once an effort to 'win over' your favorite potential pair for events such as Little 500 is now just a tradition of sorority women and fraternity men serenading each other purely for entertainment," said Panhellenic President Marcie Goldstein, a senior.

Forum to address security breach

Earlier this month a mistake in the bursar's office allowed thousands of students' names and Social Security numbers to be downloaded to a computer in Sweden, University officials said. Today those students will have a chance to get their questions answered. The Graduate Student Organization is sponsoring a public forum on the security breach at 5:30 p.m. in Jordan Hall Room 124, said GSO moderator John Mersch, a graduate student. The forum is a chance for students to air their concerns, ask University representatives what happened and find out what they should be doing to protect their personal information and accounts, Mersch said.

Today, millions of Catholics will celebrate the Day of Ashes, commonly known as Ash Wednesday. The holiday commemorates the first day of Lent in the Catholic calendar. Lent is a 40-day period of fasting and meditation before Easter. Father Charlie Chesebrough of St. Charles Borromeo Church, 2222 E. Third St., said Ash Wednesday is one of the "oldest traditions within Christianity.
