Football recruit arrested for DWI

One of football coach Cam Cameron's 22 recruits was arrested Saturday and charged with driving while intoxicated. Willie L. Northern, 21, a resident of 1101 N. Fee Lane, was booked into Monroe County Correctional Center at 12:17 a.m. Saturday. He was released on $500 cash bond and $1,000 surety. Northern would not comment on the arrest.

2 robbed during weekend

A student and an IU employee were victims of two separate armed robberies within a span of 20 minutes early Sunday, IU Police Department Lt. Jerry Minger said. No arrests have been made. Minger said IUPD is investigating the incidents separately but considers it possible that the same person committed both crimes or that two robbers were together.

Hoosiers sweep Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE -- The Purdue media guide claims its fans are the best in the country. But many of them headed for the exits with seven minutes remaining Saturday with IU on its way to a 74-58 victory against Purdue. For the first time since the 1992-93 season, the Hoosiers (19-11, 10-6 Big Ten) swept the two-game series with its arch-nemesis. Junior center Kirk Haston relished the moment. "It's something that I haven't been a part of since I've been here," Haston said. "It was definitely something I wanted. Any time you play against Purdue, it is never easy."

Trustee lawsuit goes to court

A five-month-old lawsuit against the IU board of trustees saw a courtroom for the first time Friday. The lawsuit claims IU President Myles Brand and the board of trustees deliberately skirted open door laws in September by meeting in two separate groups of four before Brand fired then-men's basketball coach Bob Knight the next day. It asks the court to void Brand's decision and to prevent the trustees from violating the law again.

Hawkeyes erase Hoosier lead

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Junior forward Erin McGinnis had a career-high 27 points Friday in a Big Ten tournament quarterfinal match-up with Iowa. McGinnis led the Hoosiers with six second-half field goals. But the Hoosiers only had six second-half field goals. After its most productive first half of the season, IU collapsed in the second 20 minutes, falling to No. 23 and second-seeded Iowa 81-76.

With lone hit, IU beats Butler

Saturday against Butler at the Southern Illinois tournament, IU mustered only one hit. But because of Alison Cooke's strong outing, the Hoosiers were able to beat the Bulldogs, 1-0. Cooke, a junior, pitched another complete game and surrendered three hits. Junior shortstop Lisa Mattke scored the lone Hoosier run in the bottom of the first inning off a Butler error. Cooke, who upped her record to 3-4, took care of the rest.

Haston key in Hoosier win

WEST LAFAYETTE -- There is an archaic tradition Purdue fans follow during an IU game: the most productive Hoosier is the target of the most derogatory remarks. The Boilermakers came up with a few creative words to describe IU junior center Kirk Haston, who posted his 13th double-double of the season Saturday in Mackey Arena with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Hoosiers to begin season in Texas tournament

The women's golf team kicks off its season in the GTE "Mo"morial in Houston, Texas today. The 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday. IU has never competed in the tournament, which includes 17 teams its eighth year. Three Big Ten teams -- IU, Ohio State and Northwestern -- will make the trip to Pine Forest Country Club. Senior Natalie Tucker leads the Big Ten individual player rankings, according to the Sagarin ratings, which were released Feb. 14.

Team makes splash at 1st tournament

The women's water polo team made a grand entrance in its first Collegiate Water Polo Association tournament. Fellow CWPA members might not be happy the Hoosiers joined the league. IU (7-3-1, 3-0 CWPA) won all three of its games Saturday in Erie, Penn., scoring a combined 49 goals. In the opening game, the Hoosiers strung together 13 consecutive goals before Washington and Jefferson got on the board. Six Hoosiers scored two goals in the 17-1 victory and five more scored a single goal.

Team loses 3rd consecutive match

The IU women's tennis team lost its third consecutive match Sunday, this one a 6-1 defeat to Kentucky. The Hoosiers (7-4, 1-0 Big Ten) had their only success in the No. 6 singles, where junior Karie Schlukebir defeated Amy Trefethen 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(10-7). The Wildcats (7-5, 2-3 SEC) opened the day by taking two out of three doubles contests to claim the doubles point.

Seniors' hopes of defeating rival Boilermakers shattered

Seniors Ian Arons, Milan Rakvica, Ricardo Jordan and Paul Jacobson were all looking for the same thing entering Sunday's match-up with rival Purdue -- their first win against the Boilermakers. But the seniors' hopes were shattered as Purdue defeated IU 5-2, dropping the Hoosiers to 8-2 on the season and 0-2 in Big Ten play.

IU, UIC split weekend

Friday, at the first game of the weekend series between the IU and Illinois-Chicago baseball squads, the Flames blanked the Hoosiers 6-0 with UIC pitcher Larry Banks throwing an eight-hit, complete-game shutout. In the second match-up between the two schools, IU played a completely different team, with UIC having as many errors as they did runs while the Hoosiers had as many runs as they did hits Friday, defeating the Flames 8-3. UIC came to Bloomington prepared to face the Hoosiers, scoring all six of their runs in the fourth inning on four hits off of starting junior Brad Edwards.

Minnesota reclaims Big Ten title; Hoosiers place 8th

EVANSTON, ILL. -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers reclaimed their Big Ten title Sunday with a 23.5 point victory against their closest competitor, Illinois. IU finished eighth in the tournament, 5.5 points behind Michigan State. "It just feels great," Minnesota 157-pound second-place finisher Luke Becker said. "We came in here with a goal, wrestled some amazing matches and walked out Big Ten champions." Many of the 5,000 plus who piled into Welsh-Ryan Arena were sporting University of Iowa colors, and although the Hawkeyes finished third as a team, few said they were disappointed by their individual marks.

Illinois wrestler defeats Sveda

EVANSTON, ILL. -- There couldn't have been a more appropriate atmosphere. Junior Viktor Sveda approached the mat opposite Illinois's Nate Patrick. IU wrestling remembers Nate Patrick. Last year, Patrick defeated IU's Ty Matthews en route to his second place finish at the Big Ten tournament. Earlier this year, Patrick and Sveda dueled twice, with each wrestler winning once.

History repeating for Hoosiers

FISHERS, Ind. -- The Hoosiers were eliminated from the 1999 American Collegiate Hockey League Division II National Championship Tournament because of a tiebreaker. IU and Michigan State ended their battle in a 3-3 tie. Michigan State had scored 18 goals in the tournament, while IU had 17. So, despite the tie, the Spartans advanced to the semifinals. The same scenario unfolded again this year.

Career high not enough

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Even the Hoosier crowd was an underdog when the women's basketball team took on Iowa in the second round of the Big Ten tournament Friday night at the Van Andel Arena. While the black-and-gold clad Hawkeyes fans dominated the stands, the IU crowd, much like the team, was watching silently as Iowa took control of the court and arena. The only thing the Hoosiers could do to combat the Hawkeyes and their fans was unleash junior forward Erin McGinnis.

Juvenile center proposal moves forward

Stacy Ream said she believes it's a moral imperative to have a juvenile detention center. Ream is the chairwoman of the programming subcommittee of the Monroe County Juvenile Facility Committee. She is also a parent who has faced the trauma of a child being held in detention, she said.

The art of feeding the hungry

Instead of an auctioneer calling bid amounts, the room was filled with the sounds of a band playing music. The atmosphere was cheerful and friendly rather than intensely competitive. The third annual "Palette to Palate" art auction of the Community Kitchen Saturday at the Fountain Square Ballroom, 320 W. Eighth St., showcased more than 130 works from about 90 different artists.The proceeds of the silent art auction go toward food programs for the homeless that the kitchen oversees.

Black Student Leadership Summit emphasizes networking, unity

Students interested in networking and improving their leadership skills attended the Black Student Leadership Summit Saturday morning, sponsored by the African American Culture Center. Despite the early start, about 20 participants seemed enthusiastic and ready to learn. The summit was held in the Indiana Memorial Union, featuring keynote speaker Leroy Robinson, a motivational lecturer. Gwen Paulk, director of the center, said the summit was part of its regular programming.

Conference focuses on nuclear weapons

Recent tension surrounding the testing of nuclear weapons by India and Pakistan helped spearhead a discussion on the problems associated with the development of nuclear weapons in the Indian Ocean region last week. The prevention of nuclear weapons has been a part of the national debate for decades, said David Albright, senior research fellow at the Center for the Study of Global Change. The center took part in sponsoring the conference Thursday and Friday in the Moot Court Room of the Law School.
