Precautions can protect against rape on spring break

A female student is on spring break. She's having a wild time and going to parties. She gets separated from her friends and accepts a drink a stranger offers her. The drink contains the drug GHB -- a colorless, tasteless and odorless drug that incapacitates the victim. She can see and hear, and she knows what is going on, but is too weak to resist. The stranger who offered her the drink drags her into a room and rapes her.

Local woman honored for volunteerism

Beginning her speech at "75 years, eight days and 47 minutes of age," Elizabeth M. Lion, who was awarded with the "Woman of the Year" award Thursday, has influenced the community many times -- in 27 years as a professor of nursing and since retiring in 1996. During the past four years, Lion, associate professor emeritus of nursing, has increased her volunteer efforts to include volunteering at the Middle Way House, giving anonymous HIV tests at Public Health Nursing and helping at the polls during elections.

Senate to redraft budget plan

State revenue fell $102.6 million short of projections for February, according to the Indiana State Budget Agency. The shortfall puts the nail in the coffin of the two-year, $21.1 billion budget passed by the Democrat-controlled House. The state Senate's top fiscal leader said his committee will craft a much leaner budget, which would mean less funding for K-12 and higher education.

Team looks to Big Ten for big wins

The women's tennis team has been playing a game of streaks. After opening the season with six consecutive wins, the Hoosiers find themselves on a four-match losing streak. Now it is on to the bulk of the Big Ten season for the Hoosiers (7-4, 1-0 Big Ten) to try to get back on track.

Even before President George W. Bush revealed his budget plan, there was debate about his proposed tax cut and whom it would most benefit. The answer -- that everyone would benefit from paying less taxes -- is not important, because that benefit would be short-term. The fabled budget surplus that would be paying for Bush's multifarious initiatives, including the tax cut, should be used for a different purpose: the old spectre that won't go away, the national debt.
