Fraternity 'bowls for kids' sake'

Chi Phi fraternity members spent Wednesday night in bowling shows to raise money for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Monroe County in the 2001 Bowl for Kid's Sake charity event. \nTeams of 6 people were formed from several campus organizations, including 12 greek houses and seven student groups. Money was raised in several ways, largely by writing letters asking for donations and from team entry fees.\nSenior Jill Thompson, a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and chairman of the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization at IU, has been involved in this cause for three years. Her house had a team in the event.\nThompson said this year was the 13th time Chi Phi has held Bowl for Kid's Sake and the 27th year of Big Brothers Big Sisters at IU.\nThe event is Chi Phi's major philanthropy, said senior David Shear, the house's philanthropy chair. It was the fraternity's nationally-supported philanthropic cause. He said it raised $4,500 Tuesday, and that all the money raised from the event will go toward Big Brothers Big Sisters. \nThis year is Shear's second as philanthropy chair for his house, and he said all of Chi Phi's members participated in the event. \nThe evening included a hula hoop contest, the limbo, karaoke and other contests. Door prizes were donated by local businesses, Shear said.\nJunior Audrey Treasure, a member of the Delta Gamma sorority, also participated in the charity event. She said six to eight girls in her house bowled with her.\n"It was just a lot of fun and a good cause," Treasure said.
