Sounds from Old Spain

·

When most people think of Spanish music, the first things that pop into their minds are guitars and castanets. There is a genre however that takes Spanish music out of the saloons and puts it into the cathedrals. It is the music of the Spanish Renaissance. The odd thing about it is that although the music was written by Spaniards for a Spanish audience, not much is distinctly Spanish about it. The instruments are not uniquely Spanish; the words are in Latin and the composers studied in Italy. But its lack of Spanish flavor also made a unique and unexpected impression of the music by flying in the face of common assumptions about Spanish music. It still was an enjoyable experience.

Dorm fire freezes freshmen

·

A small fire caused 450 students to be evacuated from the "A" tower of Forest Quad Wednesday morning. The fire started around 2:15 a.m. in the 10th floor kitchen because of a grease pan that was left on the stove. Forest resident freshman Alison Hawhee heard the fire alarm and thought it was a joke at first. Earlier, after the IU vs. Maryland basketball game, students in the "B" tower pulled the alarm. Winter Blunderland

·

It's that time again; time for winter to officially introduce itself and get everyone acquainted with its quiet, dangerous beauty. It's also time for drivers to battle it out on the roadways, dealing with backups and icy roads. Flakes began floating into Bloomington at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and blanketed the ground in less than 10 minutes. Some students ducked their heads to avoid them, walking home quickly but carefully, with the occasional slip of a heel. Others tilted their pink-tinged noses and cheeks to the sky while trying to catch the ever-elusive snowflakes on their tongues. Still others watched the snow out of their car windows as they sat in traffic or an accident.
